stunned on the bed, unable to move, the waves of nausea the only indication that she was still in the moment. She looked down at the wooden box now on her lap. She traced her fingers along the top, just as her aunt had done, and slowly opened the lid. There, inside, were dozens of small cassette tapes, labeled with names and dates. On the side was a tape recorder. Below the rows of tapes, Angela could see the purple cover of a journal, presumably her mother’s. How had she never known about these tapes before? Why had her mother never told her?

Angela shut the lid, placed her hands on top of the box, and closed her eyes to steady herself. She wasn’t ready to hear Obachan’s voice again. Or to dive into her mother’s past. Or to re-enter the heritage she had struggled to simultane...
