Penny stopped stirring the soup, tapped the serving spoon on the edge of the pot firmly to release any liquid, before putting the pot’s lid firmly in place and tossing the spoon in the sink. She turned to face her daughter, and wiped her hands on the dark apron she had tied over her gray clothing.
