“Too late,” I blurted out.

Unphased, Lachlan continued to gaze at me for several long, silent seconds. The longer his eyes remained on me the quicker my pulse increased until I just knew he saw and heard it hammering against my throat. At least it reverberated at a deafening pitch in my ears.

“What are you asking from me?”

“For now? Allow me to be a guest in your home and cook you dinner.”

I cleared my throat twice before finding the breath to barely push out...
