took me a moment to realize she was not drawing the sigil but tattooing it into the detective’s skin, with my blood acting as the ink.
She established a rhythm. One dip for every four pinpricks. The entire design took less than five minutes to create. The finished product, or what I made out through her hair, resembled the runic alphabet representing a journey, but with an extra line extended from the outward bend.
Emily met my gaze with a nod. I pinched Veronica’s nose and tilted her head back until her lips separated from one another. Pulling in a deep breath, I covered her mouth with mine and breathed heated air into her lungs.
“It’s working.” Emily confirmed, staring at the sigil. “Again. Breathe again.”
