I consoled my jaw as I waited.  

The tight painful knot from Veronica’s punch was still in the early stages of healing. My own healing suffered due to the amount of blood I shared with her. Not that there’d been much of a choice. The alternative would have been her death, but my instincts were to save her.  

But why?  

The questioned gnawed at the back of my mind from the moment we touched down near my ship. Instincts should have pushed me in the opposite direction. It did not just bother me, it worried me. Dragons had not survived eons by going contrary to our instincts where demons were concerned.

The knot reminded me how much being sucker punched hurt.
