Nathaniel’s eyes flew open and he sat up with a gasp. After a moment of confusion, he realized that the whole scene around him had changed. He was inside, in a comfortable bed. It was daytime. The small room in which he found himself was the same size as his prison, but it was otherwise wholly different. There was a doorway, screened by brown linen. A high window beside it framed a small section of daytime sky, with a single white cloud sitting like a cotton island on a blue lake. The walls were grey rock—like his prison—but they were bathed in the sunlight that streamed in through the window.
