For several minutes Nathaniel leaned against the door with both hands, catching his breath and praying that nothing would come in after him.

Finally he took a deep breath in and looked left and right.  There were no signs of the phantoms, and no signs of the fog encroaching on the dim space.

He whipped out his scanner, directing it through the heavy wooden door.

“They’re gone,” he said with a sigh of relief. “Tell me that was just my imagination.”
