He jerked his head around towards the source of the voice. Again, there was nobody there.

“Who’s there?” he called out, and after a second his own voice came back to him, reflected and distorted.

His question went unanswered. He tried to swallow but his throat had become dry, forcing him to cough once, a stifled sound that had no echo.

“It was a woman’s voice,” he thought as his eyes searched around the edge of the courtyard.

“Who’s there?” he called again, and as the echo of his words faded a noise began to arise around him: whispers at first, in hushed but sinister tones, but it soon escalated into the loud murmur of a hundred conversations.
