Annyka held her breath as she listened to the fog around her. There was a slight breeze, the near-silent flight of something—possibly a bat—passing low overhead, the donk of what she guessed was a yellow-spotted bell frog hiding somewhere nearby, and the sound of Nathaniel’s distant and sporadic shouts, but not a single sound that could have belonged to her sister.

She closed her eyes, feeling the strange energy of the town and searching for a clue as to which way Ashidi had gone. Then she felt it: a warmth in the air coming from somewhere up ahead.
