and back into a sluggish walk along the fence line. Up ahead, the fog had crept over the fence and was beginning to obscure vision beyond a few dozen yards. Ashidi was already invisible behind it, while Annyka was beginning to fade from view. Jethro tugged nervously at his reins.

“It’s okay, boy,” Nathaniel said, patting Jethro on the neck. “Just a little fog.”

Nonetheless, there was an eeriness to the fog that unsettled him. Even the sound of hooves on dry earth was muffled by it. Jethro made a sound—a kind of ‘pfft’—and tugged at his reins once more.

“Maybe we should stop,” he heard Ashidi say from up ahead. “It’s getting late.”
