He pried his face away from hers and looked up. Water rushed past overhead, held back by the invisible sphere that surrounded them, tinting the grey sky a murky brown.

Annyka’s eyes were squeezed shut, but as he moved they began to open, and in the dim light they were the only thing of any discernible colour, shining back at him like blazing emeralds speckled with shards of silver.

The deluge passed, the domed roof parted, and the sun shone through. Colour returned to the scene. The last of the water ran off the invisible ceiling, draining into the riverbed, and they were left sitting on a relatively dry patch of shore beside a smoothly flowing river.
