“She’s in there, Liz,” he replied.

“Keep your voice down,” she hissed. “Just think for a second!”

“Ready yourself,” he commanded her, “and stay sharp.”

Then he was off, racing along the side of the wall. He heard Elizabeth curse from behind him before giving chase. The town’s rear entrance came into view, a low wooden gate cut into the wall. It hung open. He paused at the entrance and peered inside.

“See?” he said to her as she came alongside him. “It’s quiet as a ghost in there. Something’s gone wrong.”

She leapt past him to stand on the other side of the door, so that they had the entrance covere...
