“Maybe he hoped that if they thought he acted alone they could forget about finding someone to blame, and start rebuilding their lives.”

Nathaniel was speechless. He gazed out into the glaring desert, and his vision blurred as his mind travelled back through time to the moment in Joshua’s office when the Church Guard had knocked on the door.

Holy shit,” he thought. “Joshua, why didn’t I see it?”

He winced at the loud snap that resulted from her dislodging the creature’s neck. A few moments later she stood, triumphantly holding the creature in one hand and its skin in the other. She turned to go back into the cave.
