at that moment a light in the corner of his eye caught his attention. Looking over, he saw through the window a dazzling white light. The moon had risen, and its face now shone more brightly in the sky than Nathaniel had ever seen. The buildings and the pavement were bathed in silver light, and the brighter whiteness of the moon’s face was reflected in windows on both sides of the street.

He mentioned the moon, too, in that last sermon,” Nathaniel reflected, “and that wasn’t the first time. Why did he always talk about such strange topics? Why did he always speak out against the Council’s decisions? If he was so evil, why not make every attempt to remain inconspicuous, to go along with the others rather than risk drawing attention to himself?”
