Hours pass quickly and by the time people start making motions to leave my fingers are wrinkly and I'm feeling more relaxed. I climb out of the pool with the other girls and squeeze the excess water out of the tangled mass of my hair.
“Bonfire at the spot?” Amber is back to her usual bouncy self now that the work is over. Her towel is slung around her neck and her grin is contagious.
“Rain check?” Eli glances over at me before flicking his eyes back to Amber. “I’m supposed to help my dad with… something.”
I look at him but he doesn’t meet my eyes again, leaning down and drying off his legs.
“Mom and I are heading to the mainland for the night. We're doing some last minute shopping in Traverse tomorrow.” Jocelyn sounds...
