    Four words. Four simple words delivered like a cold knife to the heart. When Mark regained consciousness, he was still laying stiffly on the floor. He had no idea how much time had passed since he blacked out. An hour? A day? Laurie was sitting at the edge of the bed, looking at him but seeming to stare through him, and as his vision cleared and he sat up to meet her gaze, she delivered the sentence flatly, without passion, and for a moment he thought he’d misheard.
