“I'm going to use the typewriter,” Alice told the girl. She continued to the back of the library where the magazine racks were. Flipping through recent offerings, she chose Modern Parenting. She tucked the issue under her arm and continued to a room in the back that had a typewriter sitting on a desk inside. Closing the door behind her, she sat down at the typewriter and then reached into her notebook and extracted three sheets of typing paper and two sheets of carbon paper. She layered them together and inserted the stack into the paper feed slot. Then she rotated the roller several clicks until the paper appeared on the other side.

   From her notebook she turned to a page of handwritten notes. Copying the information they had given her, Alice type...
