“Buy--Camels?” Alice asked, looking around with a blank look on her face.  “I never smoke,” she replied.” 

   Her classmates laughed.

“Settle down,” Mrs. Drake said.

  When the final bell rang, Alice shot out of her seat and headed to her locker.  

   Freddie Gilbert, a skinny Junior, wearing black-rimmed glasses and possessing a huge Adam's Apple, had the locker next to Alice's. “Hello, your worship,” he said, bowing low. “The word is your dating a certain Rock and Roller from Jefferson,” he said.

   Alice looked at him, not quite sure how to answer. “What are they saying?” she asked.
