Chapter 14

   “National flight sixteen now arriving at Gate four,” the male voice announced over the outside public address speaker as the DC-6 was guided to a stop by a ramp agent waving two orange flags. The port engines were cut, and the propellers slowed and then came to a stop. 

   Alice, straining to see, watched as another ramp agent, standing in a box to the side of the stairway, using two black-knobbed control sticks, guided the platform over to the forward door and then eased it into position, slowing as he came closer to the craft.

   The aircraft door cracked open, and the agent bounded up the steps and pulled the door open and then secured it by a rope to the motorized ramp. A few seconds later,...
