Maddy was looking forward to it and we could stay as long as she could stay awake.  Trent had left after only two days and Big Dean and Marjory needed a day off. He said my offer couldn’t be more welcome.

But I didn’t sleep well that night, and just after dawn I heard the ambulance.  I ran over but it was too late. Maddy was gone.  Timmy and Dean were hysterical and Big Dean was trying to calm them down.  I took Timmy that night and left the three of them to grieve.  But Dean, drunk, banged on the door at 4am.  I reached my arm around him and walked him back to the house. “Timmy can’t see you like this.”  He cried in my arms as I lowered him onto the couch to sleep.
