Aaron walked down the porch steps to his buggy and climbed in.  He rode off, mostly hoping Cecily didn’t come back.  Sure, he knew it was a difficult trial for her family to be going through, but if she came back and repeated what he had told her, he’d be on trial with the whole community for driving her away.  That’s how they would see it.

     As Aaron drove away, Ida came out the screen door, her shawl wrapped closely around her, her breath making “smoke” as she talked.

     “Who was that?” Ida asked.

     “Who do you think?”

     “Oh.  And he wanted to know if we had heard from her?”
