     Sitting down at the table, they all joined hands and prayed for the meal, the hands that prepared it, and the one who was missing from their table.

     After supper, and the dishes done, Ida drilled the kinner on their different grade levels of spelling words.  Isaac sat outside on the porch swing, bundled up in his heavy, winter coat, listening to the spellers and silently cheering as they got each one right, puffing on his pipe.  He could hear a buggy coming up the drive, but couldn’t see who it was.  The setting sun didn’t help his vision.

     As soon as the person got out of the buggy and made their way to the porch, Isaac knew from the gait. ...
