An impromptu decision brought us to Costa Rica that year - a birthday getaway to relax and unwind. Jacó saw few tourists in the low season, so when local surfers took their boards to the water, my husband quickly set up his camera and new tripod on the dark sand.

As they chased each wave, he snapped action shots of their successes and failures. Again, and again, while they paddled back out, he tilted the camera away from the water and examined his captures.

It was from a distance that he first noticed the irate woman further down the beach. In a revealing swimsuit, she gestured profanities and took photos of him with her cellphone. He pointed to his camera and then the surfers, but she continued to curse in Spanish, convinced that he had been secretly taking...
