Our cave hotel in Santorini was located many steep steps below the main walkway (a small price to pay for such remarkable views). On that first afternoon, we were greeted by three kittens. We fed the timid creatures what we had but picked up cans of fish in case they returned.

That evening, they did. Quietly, they lapped up as much as their tummies could handle, then found a warm spot to sleep. They stayed until morning, pawing at my legs as I prepared their breakfast.

Feasting on dinner that night, they took no notice of the cat entering our deck. He could have easily pushed the kittens aside, but instead patiently waited until they were satiated before devouring what remained. Two more arrived the next day, both equally respectful.
